Abstract:

Hypoglycemia in the neonates is a common and well-known newborn infant phenomenon in all the countries around the world. As for as glucose is essential for cerebral metabolism therefor low blood glucose will cause irreversible brain damages to newborn infants. One, who takes care of the neonate is, responsible to identify the high risk neonate and the signs which are called early warning signs. My article is focusing on physiology and metabolism of glucose, definition according to what different guidelines consider as hypoglycemia, which infant, when and how long should be screened, signs and symptoms, etiology and Management of different kinds of hypoglycemia. Furthermore, different mechanisms of hypoglycemia development in a neonate and most important patterns of cerebral injury and neurodevelopmental outcomes after symptomatic hypoglycemia are discussed here. The personnel involved in identifying high risk infants, blood sampling and screening must be carefully trained. The results which were inaccurate produced by faulty techniques leaded to misdiagnosis improper treatment and even irreversible cerebral damages. As for as neonatal hypoglycemia is one of the phenomenon’s, if occurs, it will lead to irreversible brain damage or lifelong extremely bothering disabilities, a plan of care including glucose assessment and follow-up must be considered whenever the neonate is high risk and hypoglycemic symptoms are observed.  Even though we witness great improvements in all areas related to neonatal hypoglycemia, there are still a lot to develop.
