London, as the capital of the United Kingdom, stands as one of the world’s most ancient and cosmopolitan cities, with a history spanning nearly two millennia. It’s not only the largest metropolis in Britain but also the epicenter of the nation’s economy, transportation, and culture. Situated in southeastern England, London straddles the River Thames, positioned about 50 miles upstream from where the river meets the North Sea. In aerial views, the city forms a compact core within a Green Belt of open land, encircled by a major ring highway approximately 20 miles from the city center. London has an array of museums and art galleries, the majority of which offer free admission and are cherished destinations for tourists. Prominent among these institutions are the Tate Modern, the National Gallery, Tate Britain, and the National Portrait Gallery. The city also provides an array of parks where visitors can find respite and relaxation, including Hyde Park, Regent’s Park, Green Park, St. James’s Park, Hampstead Heath, and Greenwich Park.
